Why do pet stores sell fish that maybe 1 in 50,000 people can care for properly?

People will sell ANYTHING if it sells, whether it dies in a day or not. Those poor de-tailed and tattooed fish are an example of that. Even if they don't cost much individually, it all adds up. Think of the customer who buys that $50 10 gallon goldfish set up, stuffs some goldfish in there, has them all die, and gives up the hobby. Chances are, they aren't taking the tank back - profit made. The LAST thing on the mind of some petstore owner/employees is the well being of the animal, and the first thing is money... which is backwards! I've witnessed a woman in a position of power informing everyone that it's 100% okay to pick rats up by their tails. Mice, too. I know for a fact this isn't true, I've seen tails get degloved that way but oh, it doesn't happen very often and since the rat is only worth a few bucks who cares??? <-- that seems to be the attitude I see all too often. I almost broke out in a fiesta when I was at my local LFS and witnessed the employees really stressing to a customer that the fish he wanted to buy was far too large for his tank. I never saw what fully happened, but the fact that they even gave the situation a second thought showed me they cared something about the life of that animal. Whether it be fish, dog, cat, or rat shouldn't matter. What should matter is whether they are being given the very best care they can, and regardless of price - are they going to a home that can at least moderately care for their needs?
