Why did R&B have a very improper evolution?

After the 1980's it became less soulful and more hip hop style which is very disrespectful to rappers who are trying to send a message.I like that 80's style like Luther Vandross,Freddie Jackson,Whitney houston,The Sos band and I feel R&B should have stayed more soul like while hip hop keeps doing its thing.Do you think R&B could have stayed soulful more traditional instead of a wannabee rap route.New jack swing like Bobby Brown ruin R&B trying to appeal to urban kids instead of universal.
