Assault on a minor in Illinois?

Okay so yesterday i was driving with my friends in my car. We were driving on the street when all of a sudden we saw these two people ( a guy and a girl) that resembled two kids we knew from school. So i stopped the car and backed up to see if it was them. I backed up a little too far tho and had to go forward and go up close because it was kind of dark out and couldnt see. I approached them pretty close and when i saw that it wasnt them i swerved out of the way and continued driving. Apparently they thought we were going to hit them so they jumped out of the way. A few hours later the cops come to my house with the two people that i "almost hit". The people complained that i tried to ault them but the police officer was nice and dismissed the complaint and just ended up giving me a ticket for improper backing up. The police officer told me that if the people show up to court then i will have to pay the ticket and the court fee, but if they dont then i will not have to pay the ticket and be dismissed. (He made it sound like it wasnt a big deal). He also was saying how he could have arrested me for ault and I could have gone to jail. So i guess what im asking is, is there a possibility that i can go to jail or anything? Im a straight A student (and am 16 years old) and this is my first offense for anything and i didnt hit the people or hurt them in any way. Can someone please tell me what will most likely happen because i am worried sick.
