Why do British people turn the other cheek to people with an unpleasant personality?

I think it's partly to do with the fact that, although acts like having an affair or being improper are inherently wrong, it does go some way to prove that the 'establishment' are actually human and perhaps people can relate to the vulnerability/ normality of these acts?
